Government UFO disinformation

Also known as UFO disinformation, UAP disinformation, disinformation, cover stories, Yankee Blue

Deliberate government deception about UFOs is documented in official records, not just alleged. It took several forms: cover stories for secret aircraft (the CIA's 1997 history says the Air Force made "misleading and deceptive statements" about U-2 sightings), a recommended public "debunking" effort (the 1953 Robertson Panel), counterintelligence operations that fed false stories to UFO researchers (former AFOSI agent Richard Doty and the Paul Bennewitz affair in the 1980s), forged documents such as the MJ-12 papers, and, according to a 2025 Wall Street Journal investigation of AARO's findings, doctored saucer photos near Area 51 and a fake "Yankee Blue" alien-technology briefing given to Air Force officers for decades.

The record cuts both ways. Sceptics, and AARO, see disinformation and secrecy around real weapons programs as the explanation for much of the UFO lore, including some stories told sincerely by credible witnesses who had been deceived. Others, Doty among them, argue that disinformation was also used to bury genuine anomalies, and that forged documents can be "based on actual documents". Each case on this page is filed with its source so the two readings can be weighed.
