Sean Kirkpatrick
Also known as Kirkpatrick, Dr. Kirkpatrick
- Director, AARO (2022–2023)
- Physicist
Sean Kirkpatrick is a physicist and former intelligence-community scientist who was the founding director of AARO, the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, from July 2022 to December 2023. He is the most prominent official sceptic of the modern disclosure movement, and an essential counterpoint in this archive.
In April 2023 he gave the Senate Armed Services Committee AARO's first public account of its work. The office held about 650 cases, mostly round objects of one to four metres reported over military ranges. Only a small percentage looked anomalous, some of those linked to foreign capabilities, and AARO had found "no credible evidence" of extraterrestrial activity or off-world technology. He insisted that extraordinary claims require extraordinary science and peer review, and showed both an unresolved case and a resolved one to illustrate the method. His office then prepared the first volume of the historical record report, released in March 2024. It found no evidence of crash retrieval or reverse engineering and traced those claims to a circle of AAWSAP veterans.
Since leaving, he has kept up his criticism in public. He calls the legacy program fictitious and accuses Jay Stratton of national-security violations, and witnesses say he has explained Gimbal as a balloon and the Tic Tac as a DARPA test. His critics are as vocal. David Grusch testified that Kirkpatrick ignored his concerns. Tim Gallaudet called a meeting with AARO's leadership an "influence operation", and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna has called him a liar and offered to subpoena him. No evidence presented publicly has settled the dispute either way.

- documented Testifying to the Senate Armed Services Committee in April 2023, he said: “AARO has found no credible evidence thus far of extraterrestrial activity, off world technology, or objects that defy the known laws of physics.” — Sean Kirkpatrick Source: Hearing transcript: AARO mission, activities, oversight and budget (Senate Armed Services, April 19, 2023)
- documented He testified that AARO was tracking about 650 cases, that “only a very small percentage of UAP reports display signatures that could reasonably be described as anomalous”, and that among those he has “indicators that some are related to foreign capabilities.” — Sean Kirkpatrick Source: Hearing transcript: AARO mission, activities, oversight and budget (Senate Armed Services, April 19, 2023)
- claimed He told senators that many cases stay unresolved mainly for lack of data, “I will not close a case that I cannot defend the conclusions of”, and that with enough data UAP “often but not always resolve into readily explainable sources.” — Sean Kirkpatrick Source: Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Public Hearing - In Full - April 19, 2023 at 11:25
- claimed He described the typical UAP in AARO's data as round, one to four metres across, white, silver, translucent or metallic, at 10,000–30,000 feet, from stationary to Mach 2, usually with no thermal exhaust, and noted a heavy collection bias toward military training ranges. — Sean Kirkpatrick Source: Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Public Hearing - In Full - April 19, 2023 at 18:10
- claimed Paraphrasing Carl Sagan, he said “extraordinary claims require not only extraordinary evidence but extraordinary science”, and told those with alternative theories to submit research to peer-reviewed journals: “That is how science works, not by blog or social media.” — Sean Kirkpatrick Source: Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) Public Hearing - In Full - April 19, 2023 at 55:12
- claimed David Grusch testified that he gave Kirkpatrick his concerns in a classified conversation in April 2022, before Kirkpatrick took over AARO, and that Kirkpatrick's “no credible evidence” statement “is not accurate”. — David Grusch Source: House holds hearing on UFOs, government transparency | full video at 1:01:49
- documented Under his leadership AARO prepared volume 1 of its historical record report, released in March 2024, which found no empirical evidence that the U.S. government or private companies have recovered or reverse-engineered extraterrestrial technology. - documented Opening a September 2025 hearing, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna said Kirkpatrick had “attacked our witnesses and members on this Committee” and called him “a documented liar”; she later offered to subpoena him. Witness Dylan Borland said Kirkpatrick did not meet him when he went to AARO in March 2023. — Anna Paulina Luna Source: Hearing transcript: Restoring Public Trust Through UAP Transparency and Whistleblower Protection (Sept 9, 2025)
- claimed Marik von Rennenkampff says Kirkpatrick twice told him the Gimbal object was a balloon reflecting sunlight, and Tim Gallaudet says Kirkpatrick told an audience in Arlington that the Tic Tac was a DARPA experiment; both reject those explanations. — Marik von Rennenkampff Source: UAP & National Security: Mellon, Gallaudet, von Rennenkampff & McConnell at Disclosure Forum 2026 at 1:18:44
- claimed Answering Jay Stratton's memoir in October 2026, he called the claim that he was controlled by the Legacy Program “the most absurd thing I've heard today”, said Congress's only classified information on “this fictitious program” concerns what national-security violations “Jay and his band of pseudo-scientists have committed”, and said: “There is no legacy program.” — Sean Kirkpatrick Source: paradigm.news (archived)
