Edgar Mitchell

Also known as Mitchell, Ed Mitchell

Edgar Mitchell was a U.S. Navy captain and NASA astronaut, the lunar module pilot of Apollo 14 in 1971 and the sixth person to walk on the Moon. In 1973 he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences to study consciousness. Having grown up near Roswell, New Mexico, he became from the 1990s the most prominent astronaut to say that Earth has been visited.

He said that former intelligence, military and government sources had told him there had been visitations, crashed craft and recovered bodies, and some reverse engineering. He also cautioned that much UFO and abduction activity may be human and clandestine, and that public evidence stops short of proving extraterrestrial origin. He helped Steven Greer brief members of Congress and officials in the 1990s and concluded that most officials knew very little. He sat on the advisory board of Robert Bigelow's National Institute for Discovery Science alongside Hal Puthoff, and opened the 2013 Citizen Hearing on Disclosure with Paul Hellyer.

He never claimed to have seen a UFO himself and called the cover-up his personal speculation, so his statements are second-hand. The Wilson–Davis notes, later entered into the House record, were reportedly found among his papers after his death in 2016.
