UFO Crash at Roswell (Avon Books, 1991), by Kevin Randle and Donald Schmitt, was the most influential Roswell book of its time, based on interviews with more than a hundred people. It argues that an extraterrestrial craft crashed north of Roswell in July 1947, that the military recovered debris and bodies, and that the weather-balloon story was a cover. It was followed by Rep. Steven Schiff's 1993 GAO inquiry and the Air Force's reports of 1994–97, which attributed the debris to Project Mogul.
Its reputation suffered later: some of its witnesses were discredited, notably Frank Kaufmann, and in 1995 Schmitt was found to have lied about his own credentials, ending the partnership. Randle has since become more sceptical of parts of the testimony.
