The Roswell Legacy: The Son of the First Military Officer at the 1947 Crash Site Tells His Father's Story — and His Own

The Roswell Legacy (BigSky Press, 2007) is the account of Jesse Marcel Jr., son of Maj. Jesse Marcel, the intelligence officer of the 509th Bomb Group who collected the debris near Roswell in July 1947. Written with his wife Linda, it tells his father's story and his own: that his father woke the family one night and spread pieces of the wreckage on the kitchen floor, including foil that would not crease and a small beam with violet, hieroglyph-like markings. Marcel Jr., later a flight surgeon and National Guard colonel, held that the material was not from any balloon.

The book is testimony from a boy's memory, told decades later. The Air Force's 1994–95 reports concluded the debris came from Project Mogul, a classified string of balloons and radar reflectors whose tape carried flower-patterned markings; the elder Marcel was first photographed with such debris in 1947. The Roswell claim page sets out both sides.
