Harrison Schmitt
Also known as Harrison H. Schmitt, Jack Schmitt, Schmitt
- NASA astronaut and geologist, lunar module pilot of Apollo 17 (1972); U.S. Senator for New Mexico (1977–1983)
Harrison "Jack" Schmitt is a geologist and former NASA astronaut, the lunar module pilot of Apollo 17 in December 1972 and the only professional scientist to walk on the Moon. He later served one term as a U.S. Senator for New Mexico.
In his post-flight debriefing, released by NASA in PURSUE, he reported seeing light flashes "just about continuously" whenever he was dark-adapted, possibly one on the lunar surface, but none during the hour the crew wore blindfolds for the light-flash experiment. AARO describes the flashes as the effect of cosmic rays striking the retina.
