- Captain, U.S. Navy; Mercury Seven astronaut (Mercury-Atlas 8, 1962; Gemini 6A, 1965; Apollo 7, 1968)
Walter "Wally" Schirra (1923–2007) was a U.S. Navy test pilot and one of the Mercury Seven, the only astronaut to fly in the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programmes.
On his Mercury-Atlas 8 flight in October 1962 he described small white particles drifting from the capsule, which he likened to John Glenn's "lathe shavings", and an unexplained burst of light in the window at sunset; the audio was released by NASA in PURSUE release 02.
