Let's Hope They're Friendly!
Quentin Fogarty · Angus & Robertson
Let's Hope They're Friendly! (Angus & Robertson, 1982) is the account of Quentin Fogarty, the Australian television reporter who was aboard the Safe Air Argosy with Captain Bill Startup on the night of 30–31 December 1978 and whose crew filmed the Kaikōura lights. He describes the flight, the worldwide attention the footage drew and the arguments over what it showed.
The RNZAF and later scientific re-examinations attributed the lights to Venus, atmospheric effects and squid-fishing boats; Fogarty, like Startup, did not accept the squid-boat explanation.
