Glimpses
It was the morning of Wednesday, November 5, 1975.
There, a mere twenty feet above the ground, a strange, golden disc hovered silently.
I estimated the object to have an overall diameter of fifteen or twenty feet; it was eight or ten feet thick. The flattened disc had a shape like that of two gigantic pie-pans placed lip to lip, with a small round bowl turned upside down on the top.
They were a little under five feet in height. They had a basic humanoid form: two legs, two arms, hands with five digits each, and a head with the normal human arrangement of features.
The outside of the craft we had just left was shaped like the one we had seen in the woods, but was very much larger, about sixty feet in diameter and sixteen feet high.
“Travis,” Duane said gently, “you’ve been missing for five days!”
Fire in the Sky (Marlowe & Company, 1996) is the expanded edition of Travis Walton's 1978 book, retitled after the 1993 film. Besides the original account of his 1975 disappearance in Arizona, it adds chapters answering his critics, especially Philip Klass, on the polygraph tests and the crew's motives, and Walton's objections to the film, which replaced his description of the beings with an invented, harsher abduction scene. It remains his testimony; the documentary record of the case is in the incident file.
Walton has posted his own condensation of the account: the crew's ordinary morning on 5 November 1975; a golden disc of fifteen or twenty feet hovering above a slash pile; waking on a table among three beings a little under five feet tall with large brown eyes; a round room with a chair that showed a field of stars; a tall man in a blue suit and helmet who led him to a hangar of craft; and waking on the road west of Heber, five days later.
