00 It's because of the recentness of his decision to come forward. And I think that decision to come forward is based on not necessarily information but personal integrity. And the personal integrity involved in the individual where we appear, Mr. Paul Hellyer, former Minister of Federal Defense here in Canada, is one that I think will be a clock stopper here in Canada. Simply because he's a man of great intellect, of virtually unending energy. He is speaking all over and doing things that I just don't comprehend and hope that I can do when I've been close to his age of 82. I don't have necessarily a formal Bible introduction for him, but I'm going to suffice to say that Mr. Paul Hellyer is one of the most compelling people I have ever met in my life. He has a way of connecting people. He has a way of speaking with and to people,
02 not half people. And he's a man of great gentleness also. And I hope that this afternoon we are able to benefit from that gentleness, from that integrity, that you will see in him, a man that wants us to pay attention to what's going on. And here I'm speaking not only to you as humble as an audience but to the media, the fact that the former Minister of National Defense is willing to come forward to talk about the reality of this phenomenon is Canadian history. We are here today witnessing history. And I hope we appreciate that fact. So, without any further ado, and I do want to tell you that right after this talk we are going to dedicate 10 minutes for questions and answers through our microphone to the back. Just 10 minutes, press open. Following today's proceedings there will be a press conference in the room 23 downstairs at 4 o'clock to 5. All media and all the speakers including Mr. Hellyer will be there. Stevie G. Bassett, Richard Dolan, Stan Friedman will be there as well as myself and Michael. So, without any further ado, would you please join me in welcoming Mr. Paul Hellyer.
15 Could we have the host lights back up, please? Thank you, Vic, for that very warm and generous introduction. If my late mother were here, she believed me. Victor, you took my water. I'm going to invite my mother for the last moment. Well, I'd like to thank the organizers of this symposium for giving me the opportunity to speak on a subject which I must admit was not of major interest to me until quite recently. True, when I was Minister of National Defense 40 years ago, I received a report of sightings of unidentified blind objects, some of which were listed as natural
18 phenomenon, while others were simply listed as a source unknown. At that time, I was as busy trying to streamline my own forces, improve morale, and save the tax and bearish money. To let any natural curiosity concerning the subject of UFOs lead me on what I would probably have considered to be a flight passing. Even when I was asked to dedicate Catholics and probably the world's first high saucer landing pad in St. Paul, Alberta, on June the 3rd, 1967. I didn't consider the structure anything more than a very highly imagined centennial project by the people of a town who had more centennial projects than any other place in
19 Canada. So the closest I had come to the encounter where the UFO occurred at Arundel Lodge, a small tourist resort in Muscova Lakes District north of Toronto, which my late wife and I ran for 45 years. One night a few of our guests met around a campfire on a big flat rock known as Burn Rock. The object was a little song and chatter. Naturally, they had taken the precaution, completing a little firework to lubricate the vocal cords and ward off the show of the night. On that occasion, Jack Daniel's bourbon was the poison of choice. A couple of hours later, a bright light appeared in the sky on the south side of the lake.
19 It began to zig and zag across the horizon. The most erotic clasher. Some, but it might be an airplane. Others insisted that it was a UFO. The following morning, some positions had shifted, with a consensus being that it must have been the NAC Daniels that had been responsible for the city executive. There were a couple of hold-outs, however, but had nothing at all to break. Their condition remained unshackable. I included their story in the middle book I wrote entitled The Rebel Lodge, because the number of sightings in the '80s and '90s led me to conclude that probably there were other intelligent people elsewhere in the galaxy, and it was presumptuous of us Earthlings to
19 assume that we were the center and the edge of the intellectual universe. Later, after the turn of the century, I have met some ufologists who have worked and succeeded in sparking my use in the subject, and who provided me with significant research material. Among other things, I was asked to watch a two-hour television special put together by the Link Peter Jennings for ABC News. I hope that most of you saw it. Commercial airline pilots, United States Air Force pilots, policemen, public officials, all swore they had had personal encounters with new adults.
20 Some witnesses alleged that they had been detected. Why would they say what they said if they didn't believe what they were saying? I concluded that anyone with an open mind would have had to be convinced by what they saw and heard. What I didn't know until last week, when I was doing a little double-checking, was that before he died, I was told Eric in the live on CNN that he was convinced that UFOs were real. It may have been that program that encouraged me to read a book that had been on my shelf for a couple of years. It is titled The Day After Roswell, and was written by Colonel Puget Corso, a U.S. Army Intelligence Officer,
22 who had been a member of President Obama's National Security Council, and, later, head of the Foreign Technology Desk at the U.S. Army's Research and Development Department. It was one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. It is the unpeachable source of what I am going to say to you today. The long-time intelligence officer confirmed, beyond any shadow of depth, the long-searched and rumored that, on or about July the 4th, 1947, a UFO crashed not far from Roswell, New Mexico. And although the girl was not actually present at the crash site, he subsequently saw one of the bodies recovered from the wreckage while it was en route for autopsy. Even more significant,
23 ten years later he was put in charge above scrap, collected at the crash site, as stored by the Army for a decade until he, Corso, under instructions from his friend and boss, Lieutenant, I use the American pronunciation, Lieutenant General Arthur Trudeau, was given the task of doing something with it. His assignment was to feed that alien technology, which was decades in advance of Ireland, into the U.S. industrial system for the benefit of the U.S. military. The secrecy involved in all matters pertaining to the Roswell incident was unparalleled. Thank you.
