Pascagoula abduction

On the evening of 11 October 1973, Charles Hickson, 45, and Calvin Parker, 17, were fishing on the west bank of the Pascagoula River in Mississippi when, they said, they heard a whirring sound, saw flashing blue lights and an oval object 30–40 feet across, and were taken aboard by three creatures with pincer-like hands and examined before being released.

The pair reported it to the police. Officers left them alone in a room with a recorder running; according to Capt. Glenn Ryder their private conversation stayed consistent with their story. About 16 days later a polygraph examiner concluded that Hickson believed what he said, while noting the test could not show that a craft had landed. J. Allen Hynek and James Harder interviewed both men and told the press their accounts were likely based on a real experience.

Sceptics, among them Joe Nickell, suggest Hickson may have had a hypnagogic (half-asleep) experience; Parker, who said he passed out at the start, offers little independent corroboration.
