Glimpses
so strange that it will always lie beyond human comprehension.
The Uninvited (Simon & Schuster, 1997) is Nick Pope's second book, written after he left the Ministry of Defence's UFO desk. It turns from sightings to alien abduction: it examines accounts from people who say they were taken and asks whether the reports describe a real phenomenon.
It is a survey of testimony, and the testimony is from private individuals, not officials; none of the abduction accounts in it has independent corroboration. Psychologists explain many such reports by sleep paralysis, false memories and suggestion during hypnosis. Pope has since become more reserved about the conclusions of his 1990s books.
