Open Skies, Closed Minds: For the First Time a Government UFO Expert Speaks Out
Also known as Open Skies, Closed Minds
Nick Pope · foreword by Timothy Good · Simon & Schuster (London) · 352 pages · ISBN 978-0-684-81664-7
Open Skies, Closed Minds (Simon & Schuster, 1996) was the first book by a British official who had handled UFO reports for the government. Nick Pope ran the Ministry of Defence's UFO desk in Secretariat (Air Staff) 2a from 1991 to 1994, and the book describes that work: the public and military reports he investigated, and his growing belief that some sightings could not be explained.
Its conclusion, that an alien race may be waging a secret war on humanity, is one he has since moved away from; today he describes the evidence more cautiously. The book is his personal account, not an MoD position: the ministry's line was that UFO reports had no defence significance.
