Glimpses
Why would aliens redesign the appearance of their craft … to conform to a mistake by a journalist?
How UFOs Conquered the World (Aurum Press, 2015) is the historian David Clarke's cultural history of the UFO, which he treats as a modern myth: a belief that grew from the 1947 flying-saucer wave through Cold War anxieties, films and television, government secrecy and the internet. He draws on the official files he helped release from the Ministry of Defence and on decades of interviewing witnesses.
The book's position is sceptical but not dismissive of witnesses: Clarke argues that the phenomenon says more about human perception, belief and the press than about visitors from elsewhere, and that official secrecy fed the myth it was trying to deflate. It is the main counter-argument in this archive's shelf to the books by insiders who claim a cover-up.
