American Cosmic (Oxford University Press, 2019) is a study by Diana Walsh Pasulka, a professor of religious studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, of belief in UFOs as a new form of religion. She follows a small group of scientists, entrepreneurs and technologists who study the phenomenon privately, given pseudonyms in the book ("Tyler", "James"), including a trip with them to a site in New Mexico they associate with a crash, and examines how media and technology spread the belief.
It is an academic book about believers, not an argument that UFOs are alien craft, though Pasulka writes sympathetically about her subjects and came to describe her own experiences around them. Since 2023 her work has drawn more attention as the public UAP debate grew.
