Apollo 12 medical debriefing: the crew on light flashes seen with eyes closed, 1969 (NASA audio, NASA-UAP-D008)
NASA via DVIDS, PURSUE release 02 · 1969 · 8 min · Watch the original
Pete Conrad, Dick Gordon and Alan Bean of Apollo 12 describe to NASA's medical team the flashes and streaks they saw in the dark, eyes open or closed. They treat it as an effect inside the eye, and NASA later established it as cosmic rays striking the retina; AARO includes it among the NASA records released in PURSUE.

Key moments
- 0:00 The debriefers ask about the “coronal discharges” the crew reported; a crew member recalls that the Apollo 11 crew had seen flashes at night in the dark spacecraft.
- 0:43 He was told it was a known phenomenon: “you can get discharged across your eyes from gamma rays or something”; they saw them “the first night out”.
- 1:29 Two kinds, a flash or a streak, seen in one eye at a time: “We had two kinds.”
- 2:59 All three saw the same thing: “It's not something external to you. It's something that comes from the inside of you”.
- 3:42 A debriefer recalls that NASA photographed astronauts' retinas from Mercury on, looking for cosmic-ray streaks, without finding any.

0:00 Listen, we read this paragraph in here about these, quotes, coronal discharges that you guys were seeing, and that completely stops us. Tell us how this came about, and who talked to you about it, and what you saw. Somebody reported it on one of the earlier flights that some guy, like a letter, his paperwork somewhere, and they shifted down to me into Cape about two things where the VHF radio noises would be discharges from someplace in space, and the other ones were, I thought it was Neil's flight, he said, Air Force is seeing flashes on spacecraft, it's nice with their eyes closed, they noticed them when they were awake at night, the spacecraft was dark, and they thought they were in the spacecraft, but whoever this guy was, no, that's a perfectly known phenomena, you can get discharged across your eyes from gamma rays or something.
1:00 So you add a bunch of things, would we close our eyes and face the moon, you know, when we were orbiting it, because it would be more, you'd get less discharges facing the moon and away from them. You don't have to be anywhere to do the moon or anywhere, the first night out, bing, bing, And if you keep your eyes closed and your weight down there and it's dark and you think about it, when it happens, you can spin down and it's one eye. It's not a zigzag you can see in both eyes. You can really see it with one eye or the other eye. And you can see what kind it is. We had two kinds. I guess the part will either strike the eyeball perpendicular or it's just going to parallel. And we get either a flag like that or we get a streak. And I'm the only one that I know. They either got a flag or a streak. And I for some reason got more with my left eye than my right eye. But I could tell which eye it was when I was concentrating on it.
2:01 I'm trying to tell you the reason you did is because it's where he slept was always on the left side of the space track. And that's how I've switched on the cross there and I caught all the right ones in my eye. I split down. They should have protected you, Dick. They should have picked them all up. I may be surprised you didn't hear about this because we were asked to. specifically experiment with this. I can't say. I was going to say. There's two pages in the place. We didn't bother. We were seeing it every now and we can all start. There's a paper right now and I'll look at the exact thing. The two phenomena that came out of a letter. Buzz Neal talked about this. I remember their conversation about it. They thought it was something penetrating the spacecraft. What Peter described is the exact phenomena of all three of us. You see a light, you know, just a plaque out
3:03 there or sometimes there'd be a on the street. And I saw them in both eyes, he or I, and I can't remember if there was one of those more predominant than the other. But I agree with Steve, it's a phenomenon that you're not seeing with both eyes. It's not something external to you. It's something that comes from the inside of you, coming across these that one. Apparently they know about it. Apparently there's a completely known phenomena. Well, we've been looking for cosmic rays, you know, cosmic ray strikes and heavy particles, heavy nuclei that go through. You know, we started at Clearback and Mercury taking photographs of the retina to see if you could see streaks across the retina and stuff. We never could find any in there. And so we stopped that up early in, well, by the end of the... Well, probably what it's doing anyway is probably hitting just a single cell and,
4:06 yeah, that's all it has to do, particularly to make this flesh, you know, you hit a single cell. I saw one night, I was looking at the MDP, a handrail up above, and one right right along, I don't know where it went, it's here, you know, right along that handrail, for about that, that's just, and I just had to be looking at that. And I'm just almost seeing the wheel. That's right. Where you just lie there. You close your eyes. They don't want to see one. You open one eye and you have to already see it. You didn't believe it at first. We saw it at first, right? And I don't know. Hey, I'm just being spring-loaded from that. You know, on the heart that I had to keep seeing them, that guy, trying to speak to them, and they said, remember the mission, you wake up at night and you say, well, I think I'll have to see something. You close your eyes on those things and you come in about one minute. Let me ask you one more question about heart. Oh, here.
5:07 Were these random distribution of these? Or did they seem to be apparently horizontal? Okay. Were these things random? Or did they all seem to be in one direction? Like, were they always horizontal? Or were they at random? They could be at any kind of angle. But the street size laws were fine. When I saw a horizontal, I was going to say, that's interesting. Mike, it seemed to me I had the impression that they were always roughly in the same place. And mine were horizontal. The horizontal streets were always, if I knew where I was looking, it always seemed like the horizontal street was a little bit above the center. And it always seemed to me it went from right to left. No matter which eye it was in, the discharges were more towards the center and it would be just a, it was just like a pinpoint of light when it closed again. Like somebody was flashing a light at you. That's right.
6:07 You're not too big a light at you. Is that about the same for both of you? Is that the same reaction you had, Dick, and Al, the way Pete described it? But that's the, you know, I never heard about 30 degrees of horizontal when they were coming. See, I didn't know it was coming from the right or left. That's pretty awesome. There we go. But about the same, they seemed to appear about the same place. No, I didn't. No? The ones, the horizontal ones that I saw were generally above either. Same way, yeah. It was generally hot. I don't know, I can't include any other, I can't remember. I just don't remember any of them being down on the lower part of the division. Well, I, you see, you had Dick down on your back, you know, with his eyes open, and
7:10 other things that he centered his eye on, the lights on the instrument panel. But I used to notice on the boat, when I was down there, in a sleeping bag of a pitch black down there in the hole, and wouldn't make a difference whether my eyes were open or closed. And I could lay there for, if you kill a sign that way, save for a half an hour, and either open them or close them and wait, and sure enough, after a while, you'd get one. And then I'd sit there for a while and say, okay, if there's a left eye or the right eye, I'd take you a while and sort it out. And, but you usually figure out which eye I was in. Now you know what you're doing, you're supposed to be sleeping on it. And there was a comment that.
