Gus Cottey was a police officer with Barnstaple Police in North Devon (Devon and Cornwall Constabulary). He was on patrol with Sgt. Barry Mitchell near Lynton at about 1.10 am on 31 March 1993 when the two officers stopped to watch bright lights cross from the Bristol Channel and pass over them.
