Official record (PURSUE) · 2001 · Kodori Gorge, Abkhazia, Georgia
State Department UAP Cable 003 — Tbilisi, Georgia, October 30, 2001
Official PURSUE description (Department of War / AARO, release 01):
On October 28-29, there was an incident alleged by the Georgian Foreign Ministry that Russian aircraft had violated Georgian airspace and bombed areas of the Kodori Gorge. Russians denied any of the claims and said that it could have been UFOs. Cable authors note that Russians typically engage in the “bold lie” when they wish to conceal actions.
Note. This is a confidential U.S. Embassy Moscow cable (MOSCOW 13169, 30 October 2001), "UFOs over Georgia: strange encounters of an MFA kind", about the country of Georgia, not the U.S. state. Russian Foreign Ministry officials denied Georgian accusations that Russian aircraft had bombed the Kodori Gorge in Abkhazia on 28–29 October, one remarking that reports of planes might as well have been about "UFOs". It is a diplomatic dispute, not a UAP observation; the importer pins its place to the Kodori Gorge.
