Emil J. Smith

Also known as E. J. Smith, Capt. E. J. Smith, Captain Smith

Emil J. Smith was a United Air Lines captain. On the evening of 4 July 1947, flying Flight 105 from Boise to Seattle, he and his crew watched a group of five objects, and later a second group, silhouetted against the sunset near Emmett, Idaho, and followed them for about 45 miles.

His account was carried by the United Press the next day; the Air Force's copy of the report in its Blue Book files blacks out his name, which NICAP and the press of the time give as Capt. E. J. Smith.
