Houston airliner encounter (May 2021)

On the evening of 5 or 7 May 2021, by his logbook, Benjamin Read, a former Marine F/A-18 pilot flying as first officer, was climbing out of Houston for Minneapolis when the high-altitude controller called traffic at 11 o'clock and ordered an immediate level-off at 15,000 feet. Read says the controller described the target as "popping on and off my scope all day" and not squawking. He saw a motionless, mercury-like oblong object about the size of a 737 between two cloud layers over central Houston, rolled away, and watched it leave at great speed as they passed within about 500 feet.

The captain tried to photograph it and got nothing, and on the recorded frequency called it maybe "a big Mylar balloon"; the controller, Read says, did not think so. Read did not file a safety report and does not know whether the captain did. He puts the sighting at "four seconds, maybe less" and raises expectation bias himself: the crew had been told to watch for Chinese rocket debris that night.

That debris anchor is doubtful. The Long March 5B core stage launched in April 2021 re-entered over the Indian Ocean on 9 May 2021, so the red streaks Read recalls over Minneapolis were not its re-entry, and his date may be slightly off. No ATC recording, radar data, report or second witness is on record; the account rests on Read alone, and on his recollection of what the captain and the controller said.
