Glimpses
Project Blue Book, the Air Force's project on UFOs, was always regarded officially as "unclassified," but this amounted to a standing joke among those who knew better.
Blue Book files were not open to the public, even though the Air Force claimed publicly that Blue Book was an open book.
The Hynek UFO Report (Dell, 1977) is J. Allen Hynek's insider's review of the Air Force's UFO files, written after the Blue Book records became available. Hynek, the project's scientific consultant from 1948 to 1969, goes through cases the Air Force had filed as explained and argues that many explanations were forced, and that the project, after its first director Edward Ruppelt left, was run as public relations rather than science.
It is the testimony of the man inside the official investigation, which gives it weight; it is also his own reading of files that the Air Force and the Condon study judged differently. He is candid that he started out enjoying the role of debunker.
